5-Series BMW Brought Back to Life!! (Another Wetsand Job)

Deanski- Thanks for the info Dean. I agree that the paint is cured, although it does harden-up quite a bit though the longer you wait to refinish it. I notice a huge difference in paint hardness in just a few days. Do you have any experience with this kind of paint (Spies Hecker)? It is definitely the hardest paint I have ever worked on!

It definitely made it a lot easier with all of the emblems and molding off the car! I am actually working on an 08' Infiniti G37 wetsand job with Ryan as we speak and will have more of these type of jobs in the near future :nomore: I am getting tired! :D

Yep, Heckler is what it does to people trying to polish it.. it "Heckles" you:doh Damn paint is boderline Ceramiclear. Great paint for keeping marring mostly off, but damn when you do have to correct it, you have to really go with harder pads.

Wetsanding is always a tireless job. I have paper that goes down to 12K grit mostly for plastic correction (lenses, convertable tops etc) but having all this finer grit works well and less compounding, more finer polishing. It's a real PITA but done right, you can remove/level most orange peel and make any finish look like a mirror.

PO85RD is one hell of a polish for this finish and does well since the paint is hard. As everyone can see, it turns it into such a high deep gloss.

I'll bet you're tired after that one. hard paint like this will wear you down fast. Having all the trim, emblems etc off makes the job so much easier.

Hopefully, you are getting properly compensated for this work as it shows your level of talent which requires more than some typical price. This is ART!:xyxthumbs

You did one hell of a job and I raise my glass to you!!:bigups

Regards,

Deanski

Excellent work as always. :bow

Honestly, I don't know how you have the patience for a job like that. I think I'd go nuts spending that much time on a car. :nervous2:

Superb work on that car Rick!!!!!

If you get a chance to talk to the body shop folks, see if they use 3M Trizact 3000 grit as a final level of sanding. I use that grit on an air orbital and it provides a fantastic finish for Extra Cut. Probably cuts my compounding time by 1/3rd.

Again, very nice work and no mouldings to tape off LOL!

:soscared::soscared::soscared::chuckle:all i can say is :soscared:. outstaning post Rick with great info.. the car looks beautiful. :bow

kwiker- Thanks!

Denzil- Thanks Denzil! I used the 3000 Series (06060)

TSC17- Thank you!

kenny1775- Thanks a lot!

Jokeman- Thanks Bryan! Are you looking to get you truck painted? I can talk to the owner for you and have him take god care of you.

shine- Thanks!

Deanski- Thanks for the info Dean. Does the 12K grit come in discs, or just in sheets for sanding by hand? I would appreciate any other info you have. The body shop definitely needs to start using a finer grit paper on this particular paint because it is so hard. I am going to try to get my hands on some 8K and 12K discs from Micro-Surface recommended by David Fermani.

Thanks for the kind words!

Scottwax- Thanks a lot Scott! It definitely takes a lot of patience to do a job like this...

fishbonezken- Thanks!

Totoland Mach- Thanks Toto. They are using the Trizact 3000 grit, but not the new & improved stuff. I heard that the new 3000 grit Trizact is much better than the older stuff. I told the owner about it and he's looking into getting some from his 3M distributor. Hopefully it will help me out and make polishing a little easier. Have you used the new Trizact yet?

99blackSE- Thanks Brad!

Yep: as a matter of fact, I'm using it on a black 530i that has a ton of scratches. The new Trizact 3000 is great. The only drawback is the short working life of the pads versus their high cost (approx. $6 each). For this car, I'll probably use 2 pads on the majority of the flat surfaces with an air powered DA. But, it leaves such a nice workable finish it's worth it.

Once again. you have raised the bar! :2thumbs: :2thumbs:
