5-Series BMW Brought Back to Life!! (Another Wetsand Job)

Words can't do your work justice here! Such an amazing result!

You polished the front windshield so well, I can't even SEE it!!! : )

I really like that black, I'm coming around to 'off blacks and metallic blacks' as a better color than jet black.

Great job!! BTW, paint is cured... If you can wetsand, compound, polish, IPA wipe etc, the paint is fully cured as all paints are today after being shot in a booth. Once finish painting is done, booth is heated to cure the paint. We're not using solvent based paints anymore, so rest asured it's cured.

But, if it make the paint shop feel any better than why not, but this is still a paint shop syndrom that I see elsewhere. They still feel it needs to cure. Paint from factory is cured as fast as possible to avoid defects. Same thing for most shops today.

Man, that's a whole lotta work you did! Wetsanding, compounding, finish polishing. Look on the bright side, at least no molding, emblems etc! makes the job much easier!

85RD on this paint looks perfect! German polish for German paint, a match that cannot be beat! If this was Glasurit paint, some of the clearcoat can be hard on one spectrum and soft on the other.

Hopefully, you can get more of this work your way as I see you're fully qualified to take on this work!!

Great work once again!!

I've looked at this thread 4-5 times now, and it's still a jaw dropper.

You did some fantastic work, and should be very proud.

I hope the compliments are helping your sore muscles recover from this incredible effort by making you feel great about your work ethic and the results!:2thumbs:

As an E39 owner I may be a little biased, but that is one gorgeous car, and you made it PERFECT! Awesome job; I don't think it gets any better than that! If you were to put an LSP on it, hypotheticaly, what would you use?

In all honesty......I had no idea that something like this could be accomplished. Thank you, both for a treat to my old eyes and an education.

zoomzoom mazda5- Angelo, hopefully the GT write-up will be up soon. Ryan and I are both way behind posting up our past details. So much to do, such little time...

danponjican- It sure was! I couldn't wait to get the car out of the shop...

mr.ikon- Thanks! I guess the car was kind of a diamond-in-the-rough :)

VroomVroom- Man, you crack me up!! :D Too funny! :grinno: Thanks for compliments!

gtpaul- Ha, ha... :) Thanks Paul! Just send it over!

JoshVette- Thank you very much Josh!

snowskate- Thanks Jack! I'll have to sell you a bottle of the window cleaner I used... :chuckle:

tdekany- :LOLOL :D , Thanks Thomas!

Dukedude0017- Thanks a lot!

sal329- Thanks!

sixty7mustang22- Ha, ha... That's what the body shop owner said when he saw the finished result! Thanks for the kind words!

Deanski- Thanks for the info Dean. I agree that the paint is cured, although it does harden-up quite a bit though the longer you wait to refinish it. I notice a huge difference in paint hardness in just a few days. Do you have any experience with this kind of paint (Spies Hecker)? It is definitely the hardest paint I have ever worked on!

It definitely made it a lot easier with all of the emblems and molding off the car! I am actually working on an 08' Infiniti G37 wetsand job with Ryan as we speak and will have more of these type of jobs in the near future :nomore: I am getting tired! :D

Tachyon- Thanks! Yes, it's an E39 540i

blackmillenia- Thank you!

Conan777- Thanks!

Dirty-Sanchez- Thanks a lot! It is definitely nice to hear everyones positive feedback and really nice comments! I really do appreciate it :thx I work an average of 80 hours every week, so it is nice to get positive feedback from all of the other very talented detailers on this site. Detailing definitely takes a toll on my body, but I really do enjoy what I do, so it is worth it.

Moutee- Thanks! If I were to put an LSP on it, I probably would have chosen Zaino because of it excellent clarity and reflectiveness. Having absolutely no orange peel results in some unbelievable reflections and I think that Zaino would be a great choice.

TH0001- Thanks you Todd! That means a lot coming from such a talented detailer such as yourself. You inspire me as well!

gmblack3a- Thanks Bryan! I have no idea how I do it either?? :)

RTexasF- Thank you very much for the kind words!

Rick - You really went to the Nth degree on this job. The finish looks amazing and I'm glad the shop took the time to pull both glass panels for refinishing. The BMW dealers down here don't even do that!

Deanski - Correct me if I'm wrong, but baking a *refinish* doesn't cure the paint. Heat is only used to dry it faster for more shop production. Curing is the process of outgassing, which depending on the paint manufacturer, can take several weeks/months. Most shops down here in Florida don't even run their ovens and throughout the country many DIY people paint out of their garages(w/o ovens). In most cases and depending on the paint brand, paint that's not baked can be sanded and buffed within a few hours of application. Also, 99% of shops *outside of California* are still using solvent based paint. And, most shop that are spraying water are still using sovent clears. Akzo Nobel(Sikkens) is the only paint manufacturer selling water clears AFAIN. In addition, shops that spray ceramic and/or powder clears tell me that there's a "window of opportunity" to sand and buff a fresh finish before it starts to harden dramatically. Maybe that's what Rick was refering to.

Thanks David! It was nice having the glass out, but it was a little tough to wash without it! The body shop does pretty good work. The owner is willing to listen & try new ideas / products to make each job better than the last one. They still have some tweaking to do sanding the cars, but overall they do good work. I may visit the shop one day to give the guys some pointers when sanding. Some of the sanding marks are extremely deep and nearly impossible to get out, which of course, makes my job harder. I think they are sanding too long and using a dirty disc or something.

I would like to have them pick up some of the sanding discs from Micro-Surface to try out and refine the finish even more. Have you used the discs yet?

Ridiculously amazing work yet again Rick! Too bad Ryan couldn't help you out, hehe.

Oh which 3M Extra Cut are you using? Is it the Perfect-It III (05936/05940) or the Perfect-It 3000 (06060/06061)?
