Sonus Gray Clay Bar

Thanks Accululator for the entire response.

Can I derive from the quote above that the milder Sonus clay will not stip LSPs?

From what I've gathered, that is a correct statement. The green is very mild.

What Nimble said, with the usual caveats about "used properly", etc.

I experimented with this- the Sonus green even took a little work to cut through Meg's #5 New Car Glaze  But remember that I clay very gently.

I spot-clay with the Sonus green at *every* wash, and the worst I can report is that if you let a LSP go for months at a time the areas that you clay a lot will fail before the areas that you never clay.

The first time i ever clayed my car (or even used clay) i used the Sonus green. I was really impressed with the results and how easy the process was. Second time i clayed my car i decided to up the ante and try the Sonus Gray. I knew the green was extremely mild when i bought it (which is why i bought it), and wanted to try something a little more aggressive i guess. Well the Sonus gray clay marred the hell out of the small section of roof i tried it on so i stopped using it. Guess i'll stick with the green stuff. But anyways i really like Sonus products. I like the way their QD and clay lube smell.

Hey by the way, does anyone know if Sonus QD and Sonus clay lube are the same forumula? Just wondering because i've seen them priced differently.

I hope my posts about marring with the Sonus gray don't come across as bashing, as IMO that's like saying "hey, this H-T EC left micromarring!"...it's not a bash, just an observation that somebody might benefit from.

I *have* discussed this with DavidB (before I posted anything) as I was so concerned that I wondered if a bad batch of clay had slipped through. Nope, it was a deliberate reformulation designed to make the clay more effective at what it's made for, it's fairly aggressive clay.

If *I* commissioned a batch of clay, I'd have it made less aggressive, like the previous version..but I'm not in the detailing products business so I have to have a few different ones on hand to cover all the bases. Nothing inherently *wrong* with any of them, they're just different.

maesal-That's interesting about the A8, thanks for posting it! I've been leery of using this version of Sonus gray on our Audis for fear of marring. Interesting that it marred up my BMW so badly as I'm finding its clear to be about as hard as the Audis' :nixweiss Maybe small differences in hardness are enough to make *all* the difference.

I agree, it's best to use this stuff when you're gonna polish anyhow.

Hi mate,

I checked if the Audi was resprayed and it was, but the new clear coat was hard, maybe less hard than the original.

I have the red Clay Magic and it leaves more micromarring. This Sonüs is a very good product, but it must be used just in the case os further polishing.

Regards :2thumbs:

If you have a problem with the Sonus clay take it up with Davidb this bashing of Sonus is not good at all.. I look for the MODS to delete this thread now !!!!

Post of the year.

maesal- Yeah, that's what I figured. The BMW's hard clear is giving me fits so I figure the Audis would be about the same and both of our Audis have repainted areas anyhow. Thanks for confirming it. Just gotta be careful with the gray unless you're resigned to polish.

NickelPlated.45- Welcome to autopia! If you need something in between the two Sonus clays you might try ClayMagic. The commonly available Mother's would qualify too, but I'm just not all that impressed with it.

I would *really* doubt that the QD and the Sonus Glyde Lube are the same, the Glyde is just *so* soapy that it seems like a specific-application product; it doesn't behave like my QDs do, but I haven't tried the Sonus QD so I can't say for sure.
