SG curing...?

Okay, why is it that people here want to let SG cure for a day? Is there any certain reason for this? Can someone be 100% positive that it is NOT possible to put layer no. 1 on, give a little time so it can be buffed, buff it, and hit it again with SG?



Just wondering. I'd really much rather do that... strip the 'Vette, SMR w/ white pad, AIO w/ white, SG w/ grey, P21S topper.



Or, SMR w/ white, #7 w/ white (right...?); P21S topper
 
Well the people who make Klasse say to wait 20-30 minutes. I myself like to wait 1 hour. I feel it helps a little more. I don't know if you would be able to tell with new paint (cheater!) but it helps red paint.



Bottom line, if you really want to layer lots of products on, just give it 20 minutes and remove.

I let the SG set up for a long time to a) make removal a breeze b) preclude the infamous "SG haze". Others have done coats back to back (and so have I), and it seemed to work OK. Probably not a durable as layering with a longer cure time, though. BUT you wouldn't want to make a mistake on your black 'vette. The "GS haze" would really bug you, I'm sure.



I think your two plans both look fine (yeah, white Lake/CMA for #7), just a question of whether the added protection of the K twins is worth the hassle to you. If you DO apply the SG my PC with the gray pad, make sure you put it on THIN and EVEN, especially if you're not gonna wait overnight before removing it.



I'd maybe consider SMR/GEPC/P21S, too.
 
joed: Yeah, I'd give it some time to "set" before I buff. I was talking about after it's all buffed off... would you still have to wait 24 hours then? That kind of thing. (lol... "cheater!")



Accum: Hell yeah, man. The dealership still owes me/us the whole "paint protection" thing; I haven't wanted to take it to them. I already did AIO + P21S, and God, that was beautiful. Those are the pics that are in my gallery here right now.



I kinda wonder if that'd be worth it... Using Klasse, I mean. Going w/ SMR (white) + GEPC (white; been wanting to try that) + P21S sounds really good. That would also offer decent protection, too, no? I'd rather have a little bit better protection that sealants offer, but I'll take a deeper shine over a brighter one. Which is why I was asking about that. And that leaves me with:



Dawn > clay > SMR > AIO > SG (two or three layers in the time of 2-3 hours, I'd guess) > P21S, ...or...



Dawn > clay > SMR > GEPC (has some glazing properties, doesn't it?) > P21S.

I don't wait at all after I remove the layer of Klasse Glaze. Some people like to leave the Glaze on for a day then wait another day before another layer..... I think I'd lose intrest in detailing if I had to wait that long. 3 layers per day for two days then 3 layers of Platinum per day for two days then after every wash one more layer of Platinum.



Thats my normal setup.



My brother missed a panel last time we were detailing so I need to strip the entire car and start all over, oh well.
 
Polaris- OK, I guess if I were in your shoes I'd skip the Klasse for now. The GEPC doesn't seem to have much "glazing" effect, more like just a good, gentle paint cleaner, so the only protection you're gonna get would be from the P21S. BUT, what's wrong with the AIO/P21S combo you used previously? I like the mild-synthetic-cleaner/straight wax mix, use it on my wife's A8 (and it looked great on my C5-took me a while to remember what I used on it).



I'm guessing that you're gonna be taking REALLY good care of the car between now and autumn (while you decide whether or not to take it with you to college). For now, keeping up with the P21S should offer you decent protection. By fall, you'll probably want to redo the car, maybe even using the SMR again (depending on what happens over the summer). At that time you can decide whether or not to apply the K twins. If you DO take it to school (and man, I wouldn't! I taught at a local U and didn't like having my good cars in the FACULTY lots, even just for a few hours, plus you're gonna be BUSY/distracted, but that's another discussion) you will DEFINITELY need to layer up on the SG. So for now, a simple wax regimen might be just the thing.
 
I have done back to back, and I have waited a day or more between layers. I have a hard time being unbiased though, it seams that when I wait it looks better, but I would be more than surprised if some of it wasn't in my head.



I also have tried waiting a day before buffing a layer of SG off (in a garage of cource), which also seamed to result in a much better shine. But again, it could all be mental.



If I have the time, means, I usually will wait as long as possible before buffing off the SG Haze. That way I feel much more secure that the SG has had more than enough time to fully cure, which should result in better duribility.

If you're worried about P21S durability use AIO topped with P21S. You're avoiding the hassle with SG while still getting some of the acrylic protection Klasse offers.



My routine on wife's car used to be: paint prep > AIO > 3 X SG> P21S. Problematic buffing and long cure time made this PITA.

Last fall I decided to follow CMA's advise and skip SG and I was very pleased with the results.



One product I'd never skip is GEPC. It creates unbelievably slick surface, removes any micromarring that may be left after polishing, it is like mild polish and glaze in one. I use it prior to AIO.
 
Yeah, I like getting the combination synthetic / wax... AIO + P21S. Comes out nicely. Like I said, what you see in my gallery right now is from that. :xyxthumbs



Still dunno about taking it to college.
