Question about hand-polishing

When it comes to polishing with the PC, I always dread doing the front/rear bumpers.

Do most of you machine polish this area or hand polish? If you're hand polishing, what sort of pad are you using to do the hand polishing?

I'm currently using 6.5" pads. It's not that I'm unable to do it by machine, I just really hate it when I get to the bumpers. I always feel like I'm doing a half-@$$ job on the bumpers because I want to get it done and over with. I hate having to sit on the ground in an uncomfortable position, and then polish small, curved surfaces.

I might have to finally pick up some 4 inch pads just to see if I can make this part of the detail be a little bit more enjoyable for me.

After claying, I'll buff with a rotary (if needed) and then wax by hand. There's usually alot of trim pieces on front bumpers and require hand application. I've never had a problem using a wool or foam pad with a rotary on bumpers and I avoid getting wax on textured trim. I think it's real important to clay both front and rear bumpers due to their direct exposure to contaminants.

I usually just use the rotary on bumpers, unless they have a flat, wide open area that would visibly show rotary marks that I might not have removed with final polishing.

All the trim pieces and openings on bumpers cut down on the effect that a rotary mark has on the eye. With bugs and road salt, front bumpers here are often so bad that a rotary swirl is meaningless compared to the existing paint damage.

It sounds more like a psychological thing, have you tried doing the bumpers first?
