Plans for spring detail

Hello everybody,

I am planning on doing a full detail on my 96 z28 soon. I Just got a pc and some bfwd and I have m105 and m205 coming in the mail. I bought the 12oz sample bottles.

I have a few questions. What pads and backing plates do I need to get? I was planning on orange and white but i dont know if i should get ccs or what. Where is a good site to order the pads and backing plates from? autogeek has a kit with ccs 4" spot buff pads, backing plates and pad cleaner but its like 50 bucks.

also, what are my options as far as adding glaze and wax on top of the bfwd?

Thanks,

Chris

Alright, well, if you are wanting real correction, you probably (assuming you have a DA?) will want the 4" pads. You can get them and the apporopriate backing plate at detailedimage.com

And most glazes should do fine under DFWD, as well as most waxes, assuming they really are carnauba.

CK RMG and CG EZ Creme are sorta the hot glazes now.

i have heard that you shouldnt put anything under bfwd because it wont be as durable. i thought you should put the glaze and wax on after the bfwd?

Glazes may hurt the durability of a sealant. however, if you put a glaze on top of a sealant, you run the risk of the chemicals in the glaze compromising the sealant. Unless its something like DWG. Most glazes have mild cleaning agents that can indeed remove an LSP.

The typical, Autopian, routine goes like this:

Glaze

Sealant

Wax

Ok thanks. but, would adding a wax on top of bfwd kinda make it a waste of a $30 sealant? Or is there something about bfwd that makes a carnauba look better?

What do you use the Z28 for? Daily driver? How often do you detail the Z28?

If you only wax the car once or twice a year like I do, you may want to skip the glaze. Any glaze is going to comprimise the durability of the sealant. I have been able to get one full year of water beading out of my various sealants on my cars by completely wiping the paint work down with IPA prior to applying the sealant.

I can comprimise some depth and shine by not using a glaze if I could get awesome protection out of the sealant.

If you're going through all of the steps to polish the car out then there is no real reason to even use a glaze.

I daily drive the car but i have no problem with waxing every two weeks or so. I actually enjoy it. i have never used a glaze so i kinda wanna try it and i figure it couldnt hurt.

For the time and effort glazes are not worth it for a fully corrected car. Glazes are more for filling in minor swirls and making the paint pop a litte bit more on paint that has some defects and was not polished.

If you are going to polish your car there is really no reason to put a glaze on it.

If you are going to wax your car every two weeks than why not go with a realy carnauba for the full depth/shine/clarity.

Useing any prewax cleaner BEFORE you use a wax/sealant will not hurt it in anyway.

i had a 96 z28-make sure to tape that car off well, lot of sharp edeges to burn through-by the way the engine location on that car is the worst design!!! I pulled the engine and the rear plugs r just about buried under the windshield. I did long tube headers, what a job!!!

Yea I hate the location the the motor's on the 93-02 F-bodys thats why I went with a 3rd Gen to turn into my strip/show car.

Like you said doing the rear plugs on that car is a job and a half. I can pull my tranny and motor on my third gen in the same amount of time it takes to change the plugs on an LT/LS platform.

You ever bring the car to the track?

Good Luck to you and the F-body

No I haven't taken it to the track. Its pretty much stock and I dont think it would be worth it. Pretty much all the money I have spent on it has been to fix some problems with it. Luckily the plugs and wires were replaced right before I bought it. I cant wait till I get all my supplies in the mail. I have been wanting to correct my paint for like 2 years. I ordered two 4" orange and two 4" white pads and a package that has a grit guard, lake country grout sponge, chem guys max sudsII, and a waffle weave towel. Is the grout sponge ok to use on the whole car? And will one waffle weave be enough to dry the whole car?
