Man apparently trying to pass in median crashes on I-280

A driver was apparently trying to pass cars in the median of northbound Interstate 280 in Redwood City on Friday when he lost control of his sport-utility vehicle, smashing through the guard rail and tumbling to the southbound lanes below, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The 44-year-old San Jose man was headed north on the interstate near Edgewood Road at about 2:45 p.m. Friday when he started driving his Hummer H2 in the gravel median at a high speed, officer Eric Parsons said. He passed one car, then lost control, swerved to the left and struck the guard rail with the front of the SUV.

The SUV tumbled over a steep embankment and overturned onto its roof before landing in the southbound lanes of Interstate 280 and rolling back onto its wheels, Parsons said.

A piece of the Hummer came loose and went through the front windshield of a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck, Parsons said, and one of the Hummer's tires popped off and collided with the front of a semi truck. Neither of those drivers were injured, Parsons said.

The Hummer then caught on fire, and several passing drivers stopped to help pull the driver from the car, Parsons said. He was unconscious and was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. No update on the man's condition was immediately available.

i was liking the story until that part...they should have poured some drinks and watched Darwin at work.

glad no one was injured but the ***clown.

i agree with scottwax...but must say it sure seems that certain personality types (i.e. driving types) are attracted to specific types of vehicles. maybe just coincidence? i have a short list of "hated vehicles" on the road...when i see them i almost always see them driving poorly or like an ***. just my experience, of course. :)

It has more to do with the driver being an a-hole than what he was driving.

I agree. I mean, any car or truck passing on a gravel median is fully capable of losing control, esp. at high speed. I don't really think it has anything to do with "Hummer" owners per se. I mean, in Memphis, idiots pass in emergency lanes and medians all the time, and they are far from being Hummer owners. ;)

I'm not sure why Hummer owners get such a bad wrap, but man there are plenty of haters out there. It's just a modified Tahoe, and I don't see a bunch of Tahoe haters running around bashing at every whim. And, I can think of other vehicles I see nearly everyday that are every bit as big or bigger than H2s, so I just don't get the H2 hating. :nixweiss And, for the record, I do not own, nor anticipate owning a Hummer, nor does anyone in my family drive them. Just my opinion...

+1 I'm sure there are 'nice' Hummer drivers, but the majority that I see are not so nice here in the bay area. I overheard this once while the wife and I were shopping, it was a young woman (20s, 5' tall) explaining why she needed a Hummer: "I need it to hold my gym bag".

There's very little functional value for owning a Hummer IMO. I'm not an SUV hater either, it just seems like the majority of Hummer owners have a "look at me" and "I'm better than you" mentality.

Everyone has there own opinion, but I get tired of seeing that site come up. I take offense to that!

Couldn't agree more!! I can think of just as big vehicles and SUVs on the road, yet everyone has singled out Hummer owners as just evil and vile. I don't own a Hummer and don't intend too, but the hate spread for them is downright stupid and it makes all those haters look like idiots, IMO.
