Life with a Bra

Hey, glad everythings back up...

I did some price searching over the last day or two, and it seems that the clear bra installed is going to run me close to $500... :O

That's a little rich for my blood....

I guess i'm going to go with the $89 regular bra, and just have to be extra careful....

Try to find a Colgan Custom bra. I've owned 3 of them and they are excellent quality. I've compared them with a couple OEM bras side by side and I like the quality of the Colgan Custom better.

I second that. Have one for when I travel the congested highways over long distances. Colgan has excellent staff too. Talked to them on the phone and they sent me pics of my specific hood to clear up any ambiguous instructions. Got mine from autoanything.com-- arrived the day I got my car :D

Agreed. I had a Colgan when I had my Toyota truck. Nice bras. But very very tight fit. Real b*tch to get on the first time.

awesome. I send them an email because I have a factory lower lip spoiler that I couldn't find an option for in the application guide.

Thanks again for the advice!

What about www.carbras.com I already got a response from them, and they do have my lower lip covering bra in stock, for ~$100.

You can't go wrong with them. I use one on my Mustang and used one on my last car a Ford Contour. The fit is awesome and aside from maintenance the fit is the next most important thing in preventing paint damage.

This bra in this pic is from www.carbras.com

I don't have the lower piece, too much of a hassle to put on/off, $100 is about right for the full kit, figure half that for the hood piece or "sports bra" as they call it.

no offense, but people that follow close to the cars in front of them are the only ones that get rock chips on the front of their cars. It is physically impossible to have your own car fling up a rock and have it hit your own hood.

That said, if you drive in a high traffic area it almost cannot be avoided.

If you can avoid it, do so.

Its the rocks that get dropped out of trucks and then bounce along the road that I worry about. Or driving through a dust cloud or down a dirt road.

very nice deanski. Where would I look to purchase armorglove? I've found the websites for the 3M stuff, but i'd like to look at this as well.

Also, did you install yourself? If you don't mind my asking, what was the total cost, install and all?

Thanks again! I think i'm set on the clear bra. Just gotta find a make and manufacturer.

Thanks for the help!!

Armorglove.com is the website that has dealers and installers list. It is the 3M thicker film in the Scotchcal line.

Total cost installing a little over $1000.00 for ALL the work and film, which is quite a bit. It takes two men on the hood to wrap it correctly. They can also make whatever you want on a custom level. If you wanted the whole hood, they can do it.

As for paint under it and paint surrounding, both will have same amount of UV as the film does not change UV filtering at all. So after years and you take it off, the only thing may be the finish is still smooth where it was. Just a quick polish of the rest of the area and it's same. I've seen it done on quite a few high-end cars in our area, and in one show, the owner wanted it removed for the show, then had it re-installed (new one).

Black bras are known for paint damage, it's fact! Once you get dirt trapped under it, with it being forced against the finish while traveling, it can act depending on the dirt, like sandpaper. It will abrade the finish slightly or more if left over time. Short use is no problem, as you would remove it, wash the area and no dirt on the finish, but you have to closly inspect the bra for imbedded dirt before you put it back on. So, short use is OK. Long-time use, never removed, you run the risk of abrading the finish. It all depends on dust conditions. If you drive in an area where there is very little or no dust, you should be OK.

True, clear bras still need attention when you wax. No strong polishes or pads over it. You can wax over it. I have Zaino over mine. They do not yellow if they are 3M, some cheaper ones may. But my headlights, hood, air-dam etc all are fine now!

IMO, I think the black bras just detract from the beauty of the car.

Anyone want a brand new Colgan "Carbon Fiber" complete bra for a 2003 Lexus SC430? New in the box, never took out! :D

Regards,

Deanski

I sent emails to two different places, and they both got back to me saying that Colgan does not make a bra for my car....

I have the factory lower lip spoiler from the Limited Editions, so there were only about 1000 made per year, but still...

The carbras.com site seems to be the winner. Customer service was fast and responsive, they make the correct fit, and you guys have recommended them..

Sold.

Offense taken. I don't tailgate, and the front of my WRX looks like dooky.

If you've never dealt with the amount of sand and rock salt that can get thrown on the roads during a midwestern winter, I'll forgive you for accusing all of us with chips of being tailgaters. :D Depending on the how much crap is on the road, it's quite possible to drive four or five seconds behind a truck and still hear the sand that they're kicking up bouncing off paint.

Sounds like there are downsides of having a product like that just like there are downsides to having a regular bra. What about the paint that isn't covered? Doesn't that change over time? It doesn't matter which bra you use in the end. The exposed part of your car will still get more UV rays than the part under the bra and therefore will fade faster.
Jngr,

The 3M material that most clear bra mfrs use is designed to allow all UV rays to pass through unfiltered for the very reason you mentioned (so that fading occurs evenly).

I have run bras for road trips on many cars and made by many companies and the above mentioned "maintenance" is valid . What I have done with every bra I have bought is run it on a short road trip in good weather and on a black car you will see evidence of very slight maring especially where the wind diffusers are on the hood piece and some edge areas. What I did was identify these areas and I put black electrical tape there. You can put it on for road trips or leave it there all winter and up here UV in the winter isn't an issue. It will not leave residue or harm the paint in the winter. On a black car in winter dirty conditions the tape is hardly noticable.Right now I have a bug deflector on the hood and I run the bra bottom when needed.

In the summer for road trips I apply the tape, Takes 3 min , then install the bra. When I get to my destination if I am staying more than a day the bra/tape comes off. Then is reinstalled for the trip home. Tape and a razor knife are always in the trunk.

DO NOT PURCHASE A CAR BRA FROM WWW.CARBRAS.COM.

I recently went thru bra hell, if you will. I ordered a bra from "Ken" at wwwcarbras.com and their screws that come with that bra, screws into a hole in your wheel well. That screw replaces the OEM screw. Long story short, their screws(carbra.com) stripped out both holes in the wheel wells as the tightness of the bra pulls with great stress in that area. My wheel wells are plastic(2001 Camaro SS). Also, the bra was too tight and it began to bend my wheel well siding. Also, the tabs that go into my air ducts in the front of my SS did not fit at all. "Ken" assured me I could send it back "without hassles". I sent it back a few weeks later and he did not credit my card. I called him two other times and left messages. I waited 2 months and still no credit. I then called him a third and final time and he told me, "I never saw your bra or letter". I was so pissed off, I beside myself!

After I bitched and moaned Ken finally gave me a credit.

I then phoned Colgan bras. Colgans' bra fit perfect and has tabs, not screws that secure the bra.

I say avoid carbras.com and go with a Colgan bra.

I learned the hard way!   :rolleyes:

Life with a Bra

 Oh! Now I’ve read the post it’s not cross-dressing, it’s bras that go on the fronts of cars not car detailers

LOL

Try expel.com for the clear bra, they use 3m film for the clear bras and light coverings. Probably the best way to go.

Paint cures in 60 to 90 days depending on type.
