Edge ShMITT

On my father in law's Grand Marquis there seems to be a lot of sharp edges that snags onto my mitts or towels. How well does the Schmitt hold up to snags and what not?

The ShMitt will get nicked. It's just gonna happen. I've never ever experienced a complete hole though. Even with my original 200+ wash mitt. Best thing is that you will never have to go back and pull wool from around the emblems after washing!

Justin when you wash your Smitt do you put a bit of detergent in the washer or just run it through with water.

thanx mongo

I pressure wash it out first to remove any left in it. Then I come home and throw it in with my MF's on gentle with some Woolite in the machine. Never had a single failure to date. Simply a well made, tought product. The ShMitt has saved me about 200.00 over the last 3 months by not having to buy wool mitts. Plus, my shoulder and arm is thanking me.

No one has posted how there arm has felt.

How was it?

Really, this pic on the autogeek site makes it look like it gets into alot of tight areas.

Same here. I do about 5 H2's every other week and I love how easy it is to clean the grills on them. Same for the Denallis I do as well. Works well to on cars where there is a space from where the hood meet the fenders as well.

I have to put in my .02... I was skeptical. I ran into my distributor and he had a Shmitt which I bought thinking yea right it's going to replace my wool mitt. Well, I was very convinced after my first wash. So much so, I was again two days later being more observant. I am SOLD. I initially tried the white/yellow wash mitt.

The product is simply awesome. Why? For one thing it did bother me that the wool mitts did have the potential of capturing and embedding grit inside the nap. Once inside the nap it was hard to see grit inside. But I trusted the system. With the Shmitt and white foam pad, the grit & dirt stand out. I also found out that the foam pad of the Shmitt holds far more suds and water (if it kept in a horizontal position). The wool mitt has tremendous run off - which I tried to mitigate putting a grout sponge inside the mitt. The other downside to wool mitts is that after short while, then wool naps up which too much and time to either get rid of it or use it for the underbody, etc.

One more advantage is that the cleanup is very easy. You hose off the Shmitt, wring it and let it dry. My wool mitt takes more than a day to dry. I tend to let it dry completely because I like to store my mitts sealed in a ziplock baggie to reduce the potential for contamination on my paint.

After playing with the Shmitt, I found a big tip:

Detailing World

Using the two bucket method, in the rinse bucket you slide the Shmitt against the edge of the bucket so that you scrape from the tips of your fingers to your palm where the excess water/sud solution with grit falls outside your rinse bucket. Then you swirl your Shmitt a couple of times inside the rinse bucket, follow that up with scraping again on the edge of the bucket with palm first and going toward your finger tips in a wiping motion where the excess water falls into the rinse bucket. You can see on the white foam pad of the Shmitt you are free and clear of any grit. Then you re-soap your Shmitt in the suds bucket. It's fool proof.

I was so impressed with the Shmitt, I ordered the white/white wash mitt and the yellow/white interior wash mitt. I am thinking of using the white/white for paint, the white/yellow wash for wheels. And then use the interior pad for cleaning and conditioning leather.

My last point is that this is not a sponge, but a foam pad. Big difference. Also, I bought this product on my dime. No free samples and no connection with the Edge company. Just an unbiased review from my personal experience.

Ok I read a thread about 2 months ago with a full review of the Edge shMitt but I can't for the LIFE of me find it now. Anyone know where it went? A few of you have mentioned this review in this thread as well. I've searched every varient of the word Smitt and Edge etc...I STILL can't find it....I know it exists because I've read it once before, when I considered buying one.

Anyone link me?

Like you, I was trying to remember a posted review here, but I found one posted by Justin30513 here:

Plenty more review there by Justin with an interesting follow up after his 100th wash. Also follow the url in my post above from Detailing World. The lads there were just as skeptical, like me... I have no dog in this hunt, but I do like the results so far. Mainly I like the time that I have gained by not stopping by my local Walmart, Autozone, Kragen looking for wool wash mitts to replace my stock that seems to wear out or fall apart...

Yes this was the exact review I was talking about......I thought it was by that user as well...Try this..

Go to search, then punch in that username (he has the same username here) and look for ANY posts of his..It's like he doesn't exist. I found a thread in which he last posted (ie it showed him as the last user to post) and when I went into the thread, It wouldn't show his post, only the user BEFORE him....weird.....

I've tried the Shmitt on my past 3 details, and I'm not convinced that it outperforms a sheepskin mitt by any means. Use one on black paint a few times and report back.

For now, my Shmitt is reserved for details that will require polishing. I'm not ready to use it on my personal vehicles paint any time soon.

Have you guys used this product on 'winter' cars (I.E. Salt, sand, etc... )? Sorry, but I think sheepskin runs circles around it. If you're talking about slightly dirty or dusty paint, then the Shmitt work decent -but for me, I've found no reason to switch from a sheepskin mitt.

I've also tried the wheel shmitt, and find that other washing tools work better in crevices. Just my 2 cents.

That's true... only tried Shmitt on my DD with light dust/grit. My DD doesn't get real dirty. Thanks for the suggestion. Justin???

I tried the Shmitt. I like a wool mitt better. the wool mitt allows me to flood the paint with soapy watter and touch the paint less. it seems to me that gritt will get pulled into the wool mitt keeping it away from the paint surface, then it gets washed out in my rinse bucket. The shmitt seems like it would hold grit on its surface and rub on the paint.

I just got one, but haven't tried it yet.. I'm desperate to find somethign to replace mitts since they always fall apart on me.

I bought one and my hand barely fits in it! Am I the only one with this issue?

Also, I have issues with how it will fit into tight spaces that usually require me to scrunch up my sheepskin or sea spone.

I haven't used it, but I am having a hard time believing this won't marr the finish. It's a very soft sponge with tiny, tiny holes. I see no place for the grit to go other than to be pushed on the surface.

I use sea sponges and sheepskin all the time. I have a hard time believing this will be better than them.

I'm sick of that Edge advertisment showing sheepskin unable to rinse clean and getting caught in emblems or falling apart. I've been using some of my sheepskin going on 3 years and sea sponges the same amount of time.

But I am willing to give it a shot so I bought one. I'm going in not liking it. Lets see if it changes my mind.

Whenver I read a post from someone who is less than happy with the ShMitt it is undoubtedly always because of a perception issue. The post always contains "it seems to me XYZ should be happening."

In the end, if you have a ShMitt and you use it often then you'll find that it does not marr paint. I've used my ShMitt dozens of times with no evidence of marring on some cars that were pretty dirty. Plus, I'm not a professional detailer. So, I wash the same 3 or 4 cars over and over again. Some of these cars are black too. I have yet to see the ShMitt cause any more marring than a genuine sheepskin mitt.

Now, I'm not saying everyone in the world will be happy with the ShMitt. If there's one thing I always say it's that there's no perfect detailing product. However, I can't find an actual performance reason someone might not like the ShMitt.

You guys are really making me anxious to recieve my ShMITTS...I cant wait until Tuesday for them to arrive, I may have to meet the UPS guy half way :)
