Dressing tires with brake fluid

A friend of mine saw some high end detailer on TV in Hollywood dressing tires with brake fluid. Is this obsurd or what?

Thats f***kin nuts, brake fluid will eat your paint if any gets on it, its extremely corrosive !

DOT 3/4/5.1 I'd agree with the above. DOT 5 is silicone based, though, and doesn't eat paint.

I have seen the art dept. guys on shoots use brake fluid or oil to dress the tires, but that is just to help us out when we want a really really wet looking tire. The reflectance is superb and it maintains the same look all-day long. I would never use it for a "real-life" situation.

Hey all,

Here in Oz there are some car dealerships that use motor oil to spivvy up their tyres... Makes them shiny & wet.

Don't know how it affects the rubber though? :nixweiss

I always stick to Meg's Endurance, Poorboys BnB & Polyglaze tyre black. They tend to last longest, give a great look and are pretty straightforward to use.

Maybe it's worth giving motor oil a try? Mineral or Synthetic anyone?
:chuckle:

Bye.

It's not the rubber they worry about, it's the sling onto the paint that people are talking about as brake fluid will remove paint and anything you put on a tire is going to sling at highway speeds, specially something that will stay wet like brake fluid. Besides, what would be the point? Brake fluid can't be cheaper than tire dressing.

Brake fluid is really nasty stuff to deal with though. Smells horrible and is hard to clean up. I'd rather go buy a bottle of armor all if I was that desperate.

Using brake fluid on tires is so old its even before my time. Regular brake fluid eats paint alloy wheels have clear coat regular wheels are painted. This goes back to wipeing your car down with motor oil to make it shine.

It's a PDMS too. But what about the Tributyl phosphate in there. It's listed as an acid though I don't know how strong it is.
