Don't know what to do....

After about 4 months and applying to over 40 jobs here in Myrtle Beach, I finally got a job offer at a resort place doing customer service/data entry that pays decent and has benefits.....BUT....and the same time, I finally heard back from the Myrtle Beach Police Department about an office type job. I have a degree in Criminal Justice so working within law enforcement is a great way for me to get a foot in the door without becoming a patrol officer which, at this point, I do not want to do. When I went in for the interview with the resort(last week), I told them that I was trying to pursue this other job and that I had testing today for the police position and the lady said that was OK and to just let them know after the testing date. Today I went and took the Nelson Denny test(vocab and comprehnsion) and passed that, got fingerprinted and then preceded to take the timed typing test. I got a "Good" on that (I'm not an excellent typist, but their keyboards were POS's, letters stuck..." and they scheduled me for an interview on Friday. I don't know what to do now, I want to pursue the police job as much as I can because of the opportunity but I have a sure job RIGHT NOW waiting for me. I"m afraid if I call and say that I'm still in the process for the police job, that they will tell me I need to choose now and lose the position. Then I may find out that someone else is getting the police position and then I'm back to square one trying to get a job!! The job market stinks down here. I'm just trying to get a job so that I can make some money before a cruise that I'm going on in March so I can have some fun. I really don't know what to do right now...keep pursuing and take the chance or just stop and take the sure job that has nothing to do with my degree?!?!

pursue the police gig.

it may be a long time before a job like that opens up, and im sure even tho its a sure thing, that the resort gig is a permanent thing.

just my opinion, but in the end, its yours.

You are in the real world now it's time to look out for numero uno! You keep the job you have and persue your dreams that is what life is all about . You only owe your job your best effort, and if its for a week or a life time you can only do your best. Keep the gig you got and persue what drives you.
best of luck .... No gaurentees in life....

If it's just an entry-level job, like the for sure job sounds, then they shouldn't have any qualms about you pursuing a different job that's closer to a long term career. They might delay hiring you for a few days until you hear about the police job, but they won't not hire you just because you're hedging your bets. Hiring managers understand that some of the jobs they hire for don't have a whole lot of growth potential and they tend to have a lot of employee turnover, they shouldn't even blink if you want to pursue the better job, it happens.

Absolutely persue your dream but keep the job that you have until something better comes along. As long as you give proper notice to your present employer you have nothing that obligates you past that. If the position were reversed how long of a notice do you think that resort would give you if they did not like you or need you or afford you?

I am a construction hand. I work at the pleasure of the contractor. In thirty years of doing it not one employer has said "Work is getting slow and we would like to tell you that you have(pick a number) days left before we let you go". When they are done with me the let me go. Often times without even sayng thankyou when they hand me my paycheck.

As Glenn22 said, "you only owe your job your best effort"

I've been in law enforcement work for 10 years now, and I love it. If you have a degree in criminal justice this could be a good start for you until you decide what type of law work you want to do in the future. I've visited Myrtle Beach several times in the past, and will be visiting the first week of February for some training. Every member of the Myrtle Beach Police Department that I have spoken to love their job and the benifits that it offers. It sounds like you have some other type of income coming in if you only need the cash for a trip, so go for it.

Thanks for all the replies but I DO NOT HAVE A JOB AT THIS TIME. I was offered the resort job but I have no started working or even filled out any formal paperwork. The police job is just for something in the officer, no patrol work or carrying a weapon. I think it would be a great opportunity to just get started in the field besides going straight into the academy or doing dispatch. I'm going to hold off on the resort job for as long as I can until I get the police interview done with on Friday.

Ya, good luck man. I think you made the right move. You never know about a job at a resort no matter how successfull they are. It's not that easy to get a job in the field of your degree so i would go for it.

go with the police job, but also don't be afraid to work at the resort for a little bit if you have to wait for the police job to start if you need money. the resort probably goes through alot of people at the entry level so it won't hurt their feelings if you leave after a few weeks. good luck. like the others said never pass up a chance to work towards your dream.

I say accept the job at the resort, but still persue the position at the police dept.
There is no telling how long it will be before they make the decision at the PD, so why deney (sp) yourself a paycheck. If you get it (which I hope you do) that will be great, and you can explain that to your employer, if not you still have a job.

Good luck with whatever you choose

I'm with Jay on this one ..
How many interviews will the PD do until making any kind of decision when and who they might hire.how long is the hiring process ? how long before they call you? If you have the resort job ,you have a paycheck.whatever you decide i wish you the best of luck.

I know its down to 6 people for the police position. Basically, after the interview I would assume the process would almost be over since its just an office job. We were fingerprinted today and they were going to send a copy to the FBI to keep on file. I'm going to go Friday for the interview and ask all the questions I need answered so I can let the resort know whats up. I also got another mini job offer thats exactly what I want to do but its where I used to live......basically I'm a confused 22 year old that is getting too many offers at one time!!
