i got one for my birthday this winter and now its getting warmer! so its ALMOST time to use it! it came with 2 white screw on pads, which i know arent the best and i want a hook and loop backing pad. mine came with the 5" counterwieght. i have looked at some of the deals at CMA and they are around $70. i am torn between the orange pads and the white and yellow ones. and they even have a set with the giant green one for "german paint" and i have a VW so i was also considering that. i would use my 3m SMR for dark cars. and i dont have a polish, so i would need one. i like CMA and would like to order from there if i could. i cant find any of the backing plates and pads at any store. can any one reccomend me a good starter kit for around $50? i dont want to break the bank getting pads for it.

also, i have some pretty decent swirls from improper washing in the past.. so i would need to do a good job getting RID of them, not filling or hiding them.

i'm in the same boat as you on finding pads that are cheap. if you find some please PM me. i bought mine from topoftheline.com a while ago and the prices have since went up.

as far as polish goes for german paint, look into 1z Paint Polish and never look back. the stuff is awesome and leave the paint very wet looking. it's on sale right now at autopia.

by the way here is where i want to be PERMINANTLY!!

my car, the last time i spent 5+ hours on it. :) all swirls filled/hidden

In the interests of fellow autopians, I finally gave in and had a quick look at www.detailersparadise.com

At the moment they have a kit on sale which is $45.95 and contains

1 5" flex backing plate

1 Yellow pad

1 Orange pad

1 White pad

1 Black pad

The 1z PP is $12.95 from them. That would be $58.90 total, but a great introduction to the world of PC polishing :xyxthumbs The added bonus of only one lot of shipping too ($8 ground shipping)

I know it's pushed the total up to $66.90, but as a long term investment I'd recommend it :)

Individual pads $8 each except orange $12

Not sure, best thing to do is PM Nick@DParadise who's a member here.

He'll be able to help you out :)

You'll generally find that if there's a website selling detailing stuff, then there will be someone here who either owns the site or works for the company. They will always help fellow autopians :)

I didn't check to see how much this kind of thing would cost, but if I were you and wanted to order from CMA, I'd get:

-6" counterweight

-5" (yes, that's not a typo) backing plate

-1 or 2 cutting pads

-2 or more polishing pads

-fine cut product or DACP (they don't list it, but can sell it)

SMR is a polish, it's just on the milder side. You'll need a "backup" product like one I suggested, which should equip you for most swirling you'll encounter.

Polishing pads get used the most, so I suggest more of those, and I think finishing pads are optional, because a lot of the products you'd be applying with that can probably be done by hand anyway. Personally I think it's better to have at least 2 of each kind of pad in case you need a spare in the middle of a session, but you'll have to figure out how your budget accomodates this.

why would i need the 6" wieght if i have the 5" one and am getting the 5" backing plate?
Fewer vibrations. Search some of the older threads and you'll see.

Remember that these weights were designed with paper-thin sanding discs in mind, not polish-soaked foam pads.

From Meguiars it should be 5", but why 5" also from CMA? I was looking over your accessorizing thread and you stated that most people prefer the 6" from CMA?

Oh boy.... :o I should really spend a couple hours and update that thread someday. The 5" CMA backing plate is a new addition, as are several other products that are available.

At the time I wrote it, CMA only sold a 6" plate. 5" ones are lighter and vibrate less because of it.

Ahh icic. Thanks for the info :). So from CMA, it'll be the VBP-5? And is the standard pads from there 6"?

Thanks for your help

The detailersparadise package with the soft backing plate looks like a good deal.

Does anyone know who makes the pads? Are they the same as the ones at CMA?

Sean

Yes, I see now that they sell contoured ones and flat. The bundles seem to be all flat.

They have little 2 oz plastic bottles for mixing up Zaino ZFX too.

Wow! How do you keep your car dentless?

thanks for noticing! i park far away, always in end spots. and when i have had a dent (caused by me in my tiny garage) i have a PDR guy who does excellent work. and lucky for me all my dents have been very easy to get to, no doors.
