Carpet Cleaning Mixture

Any idea on what to use for a sort of homemade wash mixture to use with a scrub brush on car carpeting and floor mats? Would just a simple water and soap mixture (Dawn?) in a bucket work? This isn't for serious stains, just a simple thing to use for freshening somewhat dirty carpet.

Any ideas?

I feel like I can answer a question here for the first time! Yay!

My husband had spilled some coca-cola (ugh) in my light grey interior during the winter. Thought we had got it all at the time, but alas, there was a sizeable stain on the floor on the backseat where it had dripped down the console and under the floormat.

So, we mixed up a solution of very warm water and Bissell cleaning solution, the one for the steam cleaner. Scrubbed it in after vacuuming with a stiff brush, and then used the shop vac to suck up the dirty water. That stain came right out, and it was months old! It was great! Worked so well, we decided to do the rest of the carpets (have leather seats) and floor mats, and it didn't take all that long. The carpet came out awesome, and didn't take long to dry in our dry climate. I wish I had pics.

Good luck with your carpet!

I was just doing that tonight. I mixed up some Cheer laundry detergent and OxiClean in a 5 gal bucket. My mats are waterproof, so I really saturate em', scrub em', and then use an extractor to suck the water out.

They are still wet, I will try and remember to take some pics when they dry.

Nice job. I was wondering, what kind of extractor do you use to suck the water out. This is one problem I encounter. Though with the damn 100+ degree heat here in Tucson, drying time is only about 2 hours.

Another problem I encounter is getting the nap in the carpet back the right way. I use a brush to try to do this, but it never looks like I want. I guess that's the price I pay to have nice, spotless floor mats. I need to get some rubber mats. I am too much of a clean freak for carpeted mats.

Its an Oreck carpet cleaner, not professional by any means, but it will pick-up 98% of the solution it puts down. I use Oreck's carpet cleaner in the vehicles. It does a very nice job, and has a fresh scent that lasts until the carpet is fully dry.

I always stand the nap up on the last pass with the extractor. I feel that with it standing up, the air can better circulate and dry the carpet. Then at a later time I will re-vacuum to manicure the nap back.
