Assorted questions... kinda long, but feel free to add your own!

I am glad I kept my extra $$ in my pocket and brought the ESCORT brand again ( using ESCORTs since '88). From your own reference site, the ESCORT won.:xyxthumbs

The ability to almost triple the speed limit in 2 of the cars that I drive (LS400 and Z28) is my best protection against speeding infactions. Nothing to prove, so driving safely is more impressive.:wavey

Hey Now:

Not wanting to get in a pissing match with you, but where in the above stated article, do you get the Passport won??? Bottom line on recaping the detectors,on the Valentine 1 "Still the formidable champion in long range front and rear radar detection by a nose." Want more facts check out Car and Driver Feb 2002 . The V1 scores a 97 out of 100 points and the Passport scored 73.:xyxthumbs I own both of these detectors and the range of the V1 far exceeds the Passport. :up

How much you want to spend to have a clean driving record is up to you.:D

Ahhh lol... a pissing match!

Just curious, what do you define as "far exceeding?" I was under the impression that the 985, 8500, and V1 were all fairly close.

No pissing here. The minimal differences between the two detectors and my driving style does not warrant the $100. My use of a detector is to warn me of observing eyes (radar/laser) not to enhance my ability to break the law. Got to be careful doing 56 in a 55 zone in some small towns ;). A clean driving record is a personal endeavor and a whole lot of luck. If you are using any detector and think that you are armed against a driving infarction of excessive capacity (80+mph) you are kidding yourself. If you think your V1 or Excort has always given you enough warning to prevent a ticket. Again either you are not driving very often, obeying every traffic law, never daydream, never drive at night on a lonely highway, or your police force is not using the continuously improving "instant" on radar/laser.

A little heads-up about false expectation of radar/laser detector. I have many friends and younger brother that are law enforcement personnel. Internal joke among them is the use of radar/laser detectors. First, even with anti-radar detector detector circuitry they know you possibly have one ( profiling). This "profiling" help lead the demise of hidden detectors. Second, when they want you they will get you. Most people travel the same roads everyday and you might sneak by one day, two days, weeks but as the saying goes, "Let's ruin his/her day :D". BAM!! Most of my attacks are usually from the rear in my high profile vehicles and the Excort works very while. I go by and suddenly the detector sounds off. several hundreds behind an unmarked vehicle is waiting for me to act up. No chance but they continue to follow even though other cars/trucks are blowing by me. I am sure you have gone though this scenerio. No need for the detector to tell me where the bullets are coming from. Just a mental note of my environment will tell me what's happening.

So if you think that a few 100 yards of increased warning are worth the $100 ( definitely great for bragging rights) and thicker security blanket :xyxthumbs

Excort and a mature driving style have kept my record clean for the last 19 years and I see not reason to abandon them now.

Also I am talking about the 4500 - 8500 series not the battery powered Passport. I would never trust a battery operated unit.:wavey

Hmm... you refer to anything over 80 mph as "excessive capacity." So, does that mean doing 85 or so on an interstate is excessive?

Well, you know, many detectors are immune to VG2. Unless you're talking about Spectra (I think that's the name of the newest detector detector), I'm not so sure that part of what you were saying applies. Regardless, depending on the cop and the driver, it's often pretty easy to spot the detector guys.

Here in Va the posted speed limit is predominately 55 mph. Anything over 19 mph above posted limit is consider reckless driving and speeding and can lead to lose (suspension) of licence, mandatory court appearance and hefty fines. If one does run into a situation that being caught is highly likely ( radar/laser detector responses), trying to reduce the speed to a non-reckless level from above 80 mph ( 117 ft/sec) would require enough braking effort that the observing officer will note this act ( front end dive). Which if not already clocked, will alert him to this fact and maybe prod him to stop you. Also these devices are illegal in Va and such action, if equipment hasn't already been detected by police officer's equipment, will give him a visual clue that you have something. As you know driving a little above the speed limit (~10 mph) is usually over-looked by officers unless the conditions or actions of the offending vehicle imposes danger to others. Again 20 mph above is reckless in the legal sense and anything above 80 mph, even on a road posting 65 mph is pushing the envelope of a reckless citation.

In terms of being invisible, lets just say that law enforcement will not tell the king that he has no clothes. Also many use VASCAR (r=d/t) in conjunction with radar/laser. It is a "cat and mouse" game that is fun to play (when not endangering others) with the rules of engagement constantly changing.:wavey

It is funny how times and conditions change. When I was in college nearly 35 years ago and drove a VW Beetle ( 60hp) I never drove on the highway at a speed less than 70 mph ( no radar detector). Now with several cars with over 300hp I rarely drive over 65 ( with radar detector). Go figure:nixweiss

Well, that just changes everything, then. There's this back road (limit = 50 mph) that I routinely do 80, 85 on, but that's about it. Anywhere else it's 55, it's 55 for a very good reason (coming into the limits of small towns and such). Doing 80 there *is* reckless.

But you said it's 55 just about everywhere, which I take to mean that you were including major roads travelled in your area. What does traffic move at?

Yup, good point. I dunno why you do that (the VW bettle vs. 300+hp thing)... maybe a combination of age and knowing what your car could do?

Polaris, I too have may favorite roads to, let's say, to release the horses.:D

Traffic normally cruises about 60 - 65 mph in Va and 70-75 mph in North Carolina.

I think it is maturity, a realization that life is precious, and who knows what danger lies around the next corner or at the end of the next straight away.:wavey

"Release the horses..." lol, nice way to put it. ;)

And that's a pretty good way to look at it, I think. Helps to make sure that your next vehicle isn't gonna be a bunch of sandwich baggies, you know? :p
