2004 Mustang GT convertible vs. Mach 1

Recently I have been toying around with the idea of getting a second car for driving every once in a while and mainly for the weekends. I already have a F-150 just in case my detailing makes it to the next level. I live at the beach and its nice at least 8-9 months out of the year so I was considering a 2004 Mustang GT convertible. The other option was an 04 Mustang GT Mach 1. I really wanted a convertible because of the nice weather, they look great with a Saleen lightbar and I could hear the rumble of the Flowmaster exhaust when the top was down. Then I started thinking about things....the top starts fading, tears, could be cut open to steal stuff(expensive to replace), leaks over time and the motors could go bad for dropping the top over time. Those things couldn't get wrong with a coupe such as a 04 Mach 1. Yeah someone could bust out the windows to steal stuff but glass is a lot cheaper and easier to replace compared to a whole soft top. The convertible would have 260HP compared to the Mach 1 with 310HP out of the 5-speed model. Does anyone else think the coupe would be a wiser decision? They are both the same price just about. I'm not ready to buy right now but as soon as I get a REAL job, I want to buy something "new to me." I want something with a 5-speed and under 15K miles if I can find one like that. I found an 04 Mach 1 in Dark Shadow Grey, 5 speed, 9,500K miles for $21,500 which is a STEAL because the KBB is over $24K on the car. Too bad its like 3 hours from me. Sorry to ramble on!! Let me know what you all think of a convertible vs. coupe.

Get the Mach 1. It'll be a whole lot more fun, it puts out more sound than the convertible, and it will hold it's value a bit better because of the relative exclusivity.

get the mach1.
I had a 00gt vert and traded it for the 04 mach and i enjoy the mach better.
my 00gt had the common bolt ons, exhaust, and 4.10 gears, and even stock the mach felt like it was pulling harder than my gt ever did. Now after a few mods and a SCT tune the mach feels as though it would crush my little gt.
Besides that the vert will have a lot more flex it since it has no roof. My vert was starting to develop a few rattles in the interior after 8k on it.

For some reason, convertables don't do anything for me, so that's already one factor for the Mach. Too, the Mach has more power, another plus as tubafreak said, it should hold it's value a bit better.

FWIW...the Mach 1 is basically a non-supercharged Cobra

You can also do the same mods (bolt ons) on the Mach and get about the same percentage power gains. It's a higher flowing head so you've got a lot of potential right there, provided you stay N/A (Compression Ratio is a bit high for boost without a ton of money into the engine).

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm definitely leaning towards the Mach 1 a lot more these days. Yeah a vert would be great on nice days but it also comes with a lot of problems. I want the Mach 1 because the hood is totally kick arse, the interior looks great and the 50 more HP over the GT is a plus. Like everyone says, I don't plan to do much to it. I just want to do rims, at least deep dish Mach 1's on the rear, exhaust, subframes, lower it with coilovers(possibly, tinted windows, short throw with t-handle shifter, minor interior enhancements, chrome accessories under the hood, better intake if there is such a thing and eventually 3.73's out back. It sounds like a lot but a lot would be doing more to the engine! Now I just need a JOB!!

but once you get those mods on you will want more.
When i bought the mach i said basic stuff will be all ill do. Ive done cai, exhaust, intake spacer, built rear with 4.10's, subframes, springs, wheels, sct tune, etc and after all that was done i decided it wasnt enough so the car is about to get a fresh motor with a little boost forced in it :punk:

and since you said you like the hood so much, heres a pic for ya

Awesome car! I want one REAL bad. Thats one of the 3 colors I would like to find one in. I would LOVE to have an azure blue as first choice, dark shadow grey second, and torch red as the third choice.

I know I know.....i just don't have any money. I also need to figure out what to do with my truck. I have a 98 F-150 4x4, 5.4L, extended cab with only 63,000 miles. I could probably get $8-10K trade-in/or outright for it but then I wouldn't have something to carry my detailing stuff around, ALTHOUGH, I dont even have a real detailing job. The truck is not too good on gas but it would nice to use the truck as a daily driver and just use the Mustang on nice days, roadtrips and cruising to carshows and such.

I have been drooling over mach1registry.com for the past 2 days and searching automart.com for Mach 1's in my area. Anyone want to donate me some money?!

lol im on the registry 2k4mach. been a lot of machs up there for sale for some decent prices.
im with you on wanting the truck as a daily driver, luckily for me my roundtrip to work is only 8 miles so i dont even consider the mach my daily driver.
after my mods this winter ill buy a real daily driver next fall/winter and then retire the mach to weekend duty with my 93gt vert.

Why not just buy/build a fast truck? Then it would work with detailing and haul A$$.

That would be cool but I dont even have steady detailing jobs...I dont have any detailing jobs at all since I moved to Myrtle Beach. I want to keep my truck for as long as I can but I want a toy also. I'm 22 years old, just out of a relationship so I want to have some fun modding a car and going to shows. I love trucks and all but I love Mustangs more than trucks. A Lightning would be cool as a fast/detailing truck but its only a single cab and automatic. The Dodge SRT-10 would be cool except its way too expensive. My ideal fast/detailing truck would be a Silverado SS but I just don't want another truck at this time. I want a Mustang to mod, get paid off and keep for a while. Like I said before, I don't even have a job at this time so I'm just researching and dreaming right now

The Mach "should" hold its' resale value better than a convert. I bought mine new (at 60 years old..no less) and don't regret the purchase for 1 second. It's Dark Shadow Gray, has tons of power, gets 27 mpg on the highway, and most of all is just plain fun to drive.

Go check out the Mach 1 Registry for pics, specs, etc...bunch of great people lurk there.
