If you were attending big international car shows, you may have seen interesting Mercedes-Benz concepts finished in a unique paint, called Alubeam.



According to Mercedes-Benz, this newly developed process allows a very high gloss and color intensity. The 100-300-nanometer flakes that create the usual metallic effect in conventional paints are subject to a sophisticated process that renders them much finer (30 to 50 nanometers) and are therefore integrated into the paint surface more evenly.



This means that the light is reflected more intensively and with a glossier effect. - says M-B.



To me, it looked rather matte, not glossy, but definitely it was the most impressive true pearl (think shellfish) I've ever experienced. Alubeam is available from March for all AMG models and costs around €10.000.

Bence I noticed this on some of the "Bluetec" cars that MB had at the LA Auto Show. I snapped some pictures.......Here we go.

It almost looks like a polished piece of steel with clear coat??
 
Porsche has a GT Silver, introduced in 04, that also has a different cast to it - perhaps not as pronounced as this. I have Arctic Silver and this GT color is smoother and more satin looking ...if that qualifies as a technical description.

Chris, funny, because the GL looks glossier than the SLK, CLK and B-Class I saw. It seems that the tone is gone a bit deeper as well.



Honestly, I don't know what to think of it - it is too matte for my taste, yet too glossy to be a pure, flat finish. I love its satiny spectrum as it refracts and reflects the light, but I don't know how polishable it is (not mechanically, but in terms of final appearance), and how will it react when totally polished out. Maybe it will show its color and matte effect from a right angle, while flatter angles will show more surface gloss.



Coupe, true, the silver-overflow is boring to me as well, but hopefuly the new color trends will be more vibrant, and fascinating.
 
Bence, it was dark as hell in their corner of the building. I'm pretty sure that it was intentional though. Most (if not all) of the cars they had on display were silver or some shade of grey but the GL was obviously different. I liked the look of it as it looked more show car. It seemed to be clear coated metal to me.
 
Yes, typically, Mercedes stands use this visual language. It helps to focus more on the signature design cues, little hiding details and generally enhances the look of the cars. You see more character lines, more non-verbal general communication in a wonderfully artificial way.

Its from the Alsa Corp company, this is what the state about this color

"Prizmacoat contains a unique pigment additive which is invisible in low light or shade, but EXPLODES into a myriad of colors and hues when viewed in sunlight or under direct incandescent light. It is an effect coat that can be applied over any colored basecoat to provide a prismatic “punch�! It may also be applied directly over chrome and bright finishes as shown below."



Funny how MBenz is gonna sell this as a 10 000 dollar option....where as the price of this particular paint(alsa corp) is $1200 a gallon
