What are some things that the general public does wrong when they try to detail their cars? I ask this because I am doing an informative speech for one of my classes and I am just interested to hear from you folks. I have my own ideas of what the general public does wrong when detailing there cars...but having more examples would be great. Thanks!

They don't truly/effectively think through what they're doing. If people did laundry or cooked dinner the way they wash their cars.....

They grind dirt into the paint, causing marring.

They use inappropriate materials, causing marring.

They use products that are not well suited to the job in question.

Thinking back to my first car in college...

I think it would be:

1. Use some el cheapo synthetic spong to wash the car.

2. Use some el cheapo towel (most likely polyester since they are el cheapo) to dry the car.

3. Did not take enough car not to scratch/swirl the car. (ie using snow plow/squiggie to get snow off the car).

They dont wash it with the correct products (MF/mit)

They dont see the Importance is MF towels for drying

They think all they need to do is put a cleaner wax on and be done with it.

They think the LSP is the most important step...

I could go on for years... :o

Washing with a sponge and dish soap.

Allowing it to drip dry.

Washing the wheels with too strong wheel cleaner, possibly every time.

Or washing wheels with the same thing they use for the paint.

Using windex or a product like Simply Green on their interior surfaces.

Using the do it yourself engine cleaner to spray under their hood without any planning at all.

Washing in direct sunlight when its hot.

Applying waxes way to think, then driving all over town while it "dries", then wiping it off whenever they get around to it.

In the sun.

Buying whatever goop is on sale to put on their tires. Most times just spraying it on until it covers all the tire without any though about it slinging off and getting on the paint, or the damage some products cause to rubber.

Wrong towels for drying.

Wrong applicators for waxing.

Being led by gimmicky products claiming a year of protection.

Being lazy is a big one.

I have got to second the note about washing with dish soap and some left over rag. I see that all the time and it really gets me.

Another good one that I see at events is people who use California duster-type products on DIRTY cars and then wonder why the finish is all scraped up.
