Microfiber scratch test?

I have heard that this is the ultimate test for a microfiber product to pass.

Using it dry see if it doesn't blemish an audio CD surface with back and forth action and firm pressure.

If it scratches a CD it will scratch your vehicles paint.

Please excuse if this is posted a a FAQ somewhere.

There is a lot of disagreement on this. Some feel that car paint is a lot harder than a CD, so it is a useless test. Others feel that it is a way of comparing towels, and is therefore valid. I think if the towel will not scratch a CD, it won't scratch your paint, but that doesn't mean that if it scratches the CD it WILL scratch paint.

also.... there's just that little area of a cd to test, which isn't much. where as on a car, you have a wider area/surface that you are constantly applying/putting pressure on. i think all mf's can scratch to a point, it really matters on how you use them.

Depends on the paint. IMHO, the CD test is somewhat accurate for softer paints, like Honda and most SS paints (non-white). It's way off for Audi paint, you damn near need a key to scratch that stuff. Ceramiclear is also WAY harder than a CD, and most clears are slightly to somewhat harder (my GM paint is harder than a CD, but not amazingly so).

The CD test is only an indication, not a true test. First of all you should polish the CD with the towel using wax or polish, just like on your car. Don't use any more pressure than you would use on the car. Them, is the CD scratches the towel MIGHT scratch the car, MIGHT because it depends on the paint you have.

Hmmmmm........Last time i looked at a black Audi, I scratched it !!

Audi/VW paint , IMO, has always been a pleasure to detail.
