Autoglym Help Needed

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this forum, but not new to detailing..I've been doing it by hand for most of the 7 yrs I've done it. (As an enthusiast only). I recently got a Porter Cable 7424 but wasn't impressed with my results. I gathered from searching in the archives that I've probably mixed products that are dulling the finish some, so let me state the detailing routine I follow to make it easier for critique

1) Wash

2) Clay with the Mothers Clay Bar

3) Autoglym Super Resin Polish applied with the PC

4) 3M Imperial Hand Glaze (After reading the forums I realized this is a big mistake)

5) Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection, 1 coat.

6) 3M Show Car Paste Wax..(Perhaps another mistake?)

The finish is good, but not as good as some pictures I've seen others post. I notice that when I apply the 3M wax, it definitely dulls the finish..The only reason I add it, is that I've read that some like to layer a carnuba wax on top of a sealant like the Extra Gloss Protection.

I know from reading the forums, I never should put Imperial Hand Glaze and then try Extra Gloss Protection on it..I'm pretty sure I'm doing some other stupid things as well!

Also, I've read through the forums and seen positive reviews for Super-Glym. I understand that it is Super Resin Polish without the mild abrasives. Is this true?

Thanks to everyone for their posts,

Sam

Welcome Sam.

I am not sure about the Super-Glym but no doubt someone will be able to comment on it.

SRP is great but it is a very mild polish so unless your paint is in very good condition you will need something stronger.

The EGP is designed to work with SRP and I have yet to find any other product which it works well with, but that is not to say there are none.

Using a wax after EGP is fine, I have done so for years

Lowejackson,

Thank you very much for your response. The paintwork on my cars are in good condition. Both cars are garaged and detailed 4 times a year. Like most people here, I'm rather dedicated towards this sort of thing.

What waxes do you recommend using on top of the EGP? The 3M wax I use is a major pain, and I think it is dulling the EGP.

Thanks for your help!

Sam

Super Glym as you say does not have have the cut Super Resin has, which for me is mild enough not to worry about using fairly often.

I goes on easily like the Super resin but is not as easy off. I would stick to the Super Resin.

I have topped EGP with a good few waxes and nothing has taken away from the look. What colour you using it on?

Richt,

Thank you for your response. I am using it on a Navy Blue and Beige car. After reading so much about the Mothers Reflection Line I'm wondering about using them instead of the 3M wax I have right now. In another posting on this forum, someone said that it was not a good idea to use a glaze before EGP because of the oily base it would provide. The 3M wax is also a major pain to remove, so I'm wondering if there are better waxes out there.

I'm wondering whether I should change my sequence of polishes and waxes to the following:

1) Wash

2) Clay with the Mothers Clay Bar

3) Autoglym Super Resin Polish applied with the PC

4) Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection, 1 coat.

5) Mothers Reflections Top Coat and/or Advanced Car Wax (Does have mild cleaners though..)

I read that EGP is classified as a paint sealant, so should one put a Synthetic wax on top or a pure Carnuba?

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!

Sincerely,

Sam

Dont forget you can layer EGP for extra protection.

I have used Blitz, P21S wax and some others without any problems although I would guess a cleaner wax would remove some of the EGP. Rich has a far greater knowledge and experience of different waxes so he can probably offer more detailed advice.

sv7887- Welcome to Autopia!

I too am surprised that the 3M dulled the look and also that you found it hard to use. But OK, I won't argue. It doesn't matter if you use a natural carnauba or a synthetic blend wax over the EGP. Maybe consider Natty's Blue, everyone seems to like it these days (my first choice, and go-to wax is Meg's #16 which isn't commonly available any more). Souveran would look nice but won't last too long. Many people like P21S/S100, but I'm not one of them.

I'd layer EGP before topping it whatever you use and I sure wouldn't consider topping to be mandatory. And I wouldn't bother getting the Super Glym, the abrasives in SRP aren't anything to think twice about. If anything they just make it easier to use.

I layered 3 coats of the EGP on my Black car before topping with wax. Each coat of EGP added more depth and gloss.

I have no experience of the Mothers waxes your planning to uses but have had great success with Nattys, P21s and Souveran and #16 waxes over EGP.

For me if you looking durability go for the #16 if you can get it, for good looks on both your paint colours I would be going for the P21s or Nattys Blue myself.

Thank you all for your posts!

I didn't realize I could layer the EGP..I have always found it difficult to get ahold of Autoglym polishes, so I'm super careful with how much I use. But after reading through the archived posts, I see it isn't that hard to get ahold of in the US after all. I used to buy a few bottles of the stuff everytime I went to the UK and smuggle it back in the US!

I have Meguiars #26, but haven't used it in a very long time..I think #16 will be hard to get ahold of here, because of the pending VOC legislation. I've heard a lot of good things about Mothers new Reflections line, especially the Wax and Top Coat (Which doesn't have any cleaners!)

Rich, your Clio looks Amazing!!! I would say my cars shine 1/3 to 1/2 of that if I am lucky. Thanks again for all of your posts!

Sam

Thanks Sam.

I have some 26 but havent used it for a long time either. I much prefer P21s for ease of use.

Yeah EGP layes nicley I got bored after 3 coats though! As long as the wax you top it with is cleaner free you will be fine.

I have used the following routine on my smoke silver (beige) Mercedes with satisfactory results:

Wash

Clay

Meguiar's Scratch X on isolated areas

Meguiars DC step 1

Meguiars DC step 2

Meguiars NXT wax

Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection

Zymol Creme Wax

I do this twice a year. Once a month or so I repeat the last three steps after washing.

The EGP always appears to dull the NXT finish, but after an hour or two it comes back. Similarly the Zymol appears at first blush to dull the EGP finish but again comes back after an hour or two.

I have found this combination extremely durable. The car has not been waxed for two or three months and still washes up really good.

This is an interesting one as I dont really trust EGP to bond over anything other than SRP or AIO. The EGP is still returning good durability when used over NXT then?

Hello Sam,

If it is a Show Car finish you want try FK1 (Finish Kare) Pink Wax over the SRP & EGP combo. Their Hi Temp wax is also great if gloss, durability and protection is more important to you than great depth as well. They do a car care kit for less than USD20.00 which includes their #2180 Sealant. The best value kit in the world.

I have used Meguiars Clay System, FK1 #330 Mini Buff although #17 Buff Kreme better (for swirl removal), 303 Foam Pad Glaze, #2180 Ultra Poly Wipe Sealant, #2685 Pink Wax and #425 Ultra Slick Poly Wipe Detailer. Most of these are in the Kit.

Alternatively FK1 Pink over Car-Lack 68 & Long-Life Sealant (aka Jeff Werkstatt)

or

What about Chemical Guys Extreme Sealant with 3X Carnauba with AutoGlym or Car-Lack. They too are doing good value kits at the moment - If only they would ship it to Ireland !

Regards,

Daragh.

It seems to be. I am very happy with the durability of this set up. I assume it is the EGP because neither NXT nor Zymol have lasted well for me when used alone. I was frankly amazed when I washed the car last week after a long spell out in the cold and a lot of miles on dirty, salty UK roads. The longer the EGP is left to go off before buffing, the better, in my experience.
