Client brough in their little British hot rod for some correction and protection. Car was painted about 20 years ago, base/clear, and was showing its age. Swirls, scratches, dull areas, etc. The brightwork (aluminum) was in need of some polishing too. Really cool car! The 'details'...

Almost looks like they were acid etched/compromised from high ph/caustic chemicals/cleaners. I know some wheel cleaners will do that to some Porsche matte black center lock wheels and center lock nuts. I'm not 100% that you will be able to bring them back fully without repainting/powder...

I used orange and white on this as they are my go to pads. Force hybrids are what I use.

I'd want to meter the paint to see what I'm working with. Some of the etching seems to be 'decently deep', so I would proceed with caution due to as you stated it is very thin. A light sanding could potentially improve those areas, as could a machine correction. But I'm not sure the risk...
